American Association for the Advancement of Science/Environmental Fellowship

The fellowship program is designed to provide an opportunity to learn first-hand how scientific and technological information is used in environmental policy-making; to provide a unique public policy learning experience; to demonstrate the value of science, technology, and economics in addressing societal problems; and to make practical contributions to the more effective use of scientific and technical knowledge in the programs of the U.S. government. Prospective Fellows must have a PhD or an equivalent doctoral-level degree by the application deadline (January 10, 2005) and must show exceptional competence in some area of science or engineering related to the environment; have an excellent scientific or technical background; and have a strong interest and some experience in applying scientific or other professional knowledge toward the identification and assessment of future environmental problems.

East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students (EAPSI)

The East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (EAPSI) provide U.S. graduate students in science and engineering first-hand research experience in Australia, China, Japan, Korea, or Taiwan, an introduction to the science and science policy infrastructure of the respective location, and orientation to the culture and language. The primary goals of EAPSI are to introduce students to East Asia and Pacific science and engineering in the context of a research laboratory, and to initiate personal relationships that will better enable them to collaborate with foreign counterparts in the future. The institutes last approximately eight weeks from June to August and are administered in the United States by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The National Institutes of Health (NIH) co-sponsor the Summer Institute in Japan.
