Research Interests

Aerosol science and its applications - design and testing of impaction-based and electrostatic-based collectors for aerosols or bioaerosols, filtration, PM emission control, particle processing (i.e., bioaerosol preparation, particle generation, charging); particle analysis techniques (e.g., optical-counting, microscopic-counting, fluorometric or adenosine triphosphate (ATP) methodologies, flow cytometry); numerical simulation for particle tracking using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools; design of the generic mixing plenum to satisfy single point reprehensive sampling criteria.

Projects

On-going projects
  1. CDC/NIOSH 08/01/16-07/31/19
    "Advanced Sampler for Assessing Exposure to Biological Aerosols" (PIs: Mainelis, G. and Han, T.). The main goal of this research is to further develop a field-deployable prototype of an electrostatic precipitator with superhydrophobic surface (EPSS) featuring very high sample concentration rates and then be used to determine bioaerosol exposures in various occupational environments.
  2. CDC/NIOSH project 09/01/14-01/31/18
    "Personal Electrostatic Bioaerosol Sampler (PEBS) with High Sampling Flow Rate" (PIs: Mainelis, G. and Han, T.). The main goal of this research is to design and develop a novel and self-contained personal bioaerosol sampler.
