EPA Sponsored Air Pollution Training Institute (APTI) Courses

ANNOUNCEMENTS

January 16th, 2009:  The United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has decided to disband its Education and Outreach Group (EOG) and the Air Pollution Training Institute (APTI), and to reallocate most of EOG’s resources to other EPA programs.  Consequently, EPA’s decision to reduce its support has impacted availability of air pollution training courses to employees of state and local environmental U.S. government agencies free of charge.  The Rutgers Air Pollution Training Program (RAPTP) still desires to offer high quality air pollution training courses to state and local air quality professionals, despite these cutbacks.  EPA Based (formerly APTI) Courses at Rutgers are NO LONGER FREE OF CHARGE for employees of State and Local Environmental U.S. Government agencies.

RAPTP is offering two courses this year, namely EPA 450 – Source Sampling for Particulate Pollutants and EPA 464 – Analytical Methods for Air Quality Standards.  Please refer to the course listing and "How to Register" below for further details.  In addition to these, RAPTP has offered other air pollution training courses in the past –details of these are also listed.  Should your organization have an interest in any of these TBA courses, please contact us so that we may offer additional courses based on demand and staff and facility availability during 2009.

Introduction

With the availability of a stack lab and a variety of air pollution instrumentation, laboratory based training is the preferred method of training at the Rutgers Area Training Center.  In addition to traditional classroom and laboratory instruction, Rutgers also serves as a satellite downlink site for EPA's Air Pollution Distant Learning Network.  If interested in attending a satellite class at Rutgers, please contact Bob Porcja (see contact information below).

Travel Information

Classroom Location:  EPA based (formerly APTI) courses at Rutgers are held at the Operator Training Center (OTC) on the Cook Campus in New Brunswick, NJ.  A map and directions to the OTC can be found here.

Hotels:  Information about a number of hotels nearby the Rutgers OTC can be found here.  Many students choose to stay at a hotel on the Cook Campus called The University Inn.  The University Inn has a website here.

Transportation: Students flying in for courses at Rutgers typically come in to either Newark Airport in Newark, NJ, or JFK Airport in New York City.  It is highly recommended that students rent cars both for getting to Rutgers from the airport and for getting around the Rutgers campus and surrounding area during the week of class.  If renting a car for the week is not an option, a shuttle service from either of the two airports to the East Brunswick Hilton is available at http://www.goairporter.com/.  From the Hilton, a ten minute taxi cab ride can bring you to either the OTC or to the University Inn.
