Research Interests

Dr. Strom's research has focused on the microbial ecology of the biological treatment of wastes. This has included work on activated sludge and rotating biological contactors (RBCs) for wastewaters; nitrification in wastewater treatment; enhanced biological phosphorus removal; composting of municipal solid waste, sludges, and yard wastes; bioremediation of oil, creosote, polychlorinated biphenyl, and trichloroethylene contaminated soils; biofiltration to remove contaminants (including ammonia, ethylene, and methane) from gas streams; and the rational application of genetic engineering in waste treatment (field application vectors). He also has worked on surface water pollution issues, including total maximum daily loads (TMDLs), especially relating to nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus).
