20,000 MICROBES UNDER THE SEA
Topic: functional diversity of marine microbial communities

Microbial cells in the subsurface make up to 1/20th of microbial life on Earth. However, mysteries still surround how these cells get to the seafloor, if they survive burial and what happens to them when they die. Using omic techniques, including metagenomics and metatranscriptomics, the subseafloor has been explored and novel microbes have been found. However, there are also many similar to surface microbes. Using an experimental setup, a created subseafloor shows that different microbial groups respond differently to the stress of burial.
