Leveraging Data Science to Empower Smart and Sustainable Urban-Environmental Systems

Data science technologies are rapidly evolving in the 'data era' due to the widespread popularity of digital social networks and big data products. However, planning practice and theory have struggled with efficient ways to integrate new technologies and quantitative methods into urban ecological planning processes for many years. This talk focuses on exploring how big data, computational technology, and digital social networks can contribute to enhancing the adoption of data analytic techniques in urban ecological planning, with a specialization on smart, resilient, and inclusive urban-environmental Systems. It traces some of the challenges that hamper the application of computational urban ecological models in practical planning, and fundamental weaknesses of current planning support systems (PSSs) including: an inability to reliably adapt models across urban contexts, non-integrated analysis for human-environment interactions, and a lack of stakeholder engagement in PSS development and use.
