Graduation Requirements

SEBS Core Curriculum Requirements

The total required credits for graduation is 116–120.

Proficiency in the Environmental Sciences:

All Students will complete the following required courses for graduation.

  1. 01:119:115-116 General Biology (4,4) (Note the lab 01:119:117 is not required)
  2. 01:160:161-162 General Chemistry (4,4)
  3. 01:160:171 Introduction to Experimentation (1)
  4. 11:375:201 Biological Principles of Environmental Science (3)
  5. 11:375:202 Chemical Principles of Environmental Science (3)
  6. 11:375:203 Physical Principles of Environmental Science (3)
  7. 11:375:303 Numerical Methods in Environmental Science (3)
  8. 11:375:310 Analytical Environmental Chemistry Laboratory (2)
  9. 11:375:312 Environmental Microbiology Laboratory (2)
  10. 11:704:351 Principles of Ecology (4)
  11. 11:750:193-194 Physics for the Sciences (4,4) or 01:750:203-204 General Physics (3,3)
  12. 01:960:211 Statistics I (3) or equivalent

Also, students are encouraged, but not required, to take 11:374:279 Politics of Environmental Issues. This fulfills your Political Processes SEBS requirement, and is a pre-requisite for 11:374:460 Environmental Law and Policy I (which is required for the Applied Environmental Science option and encouraged for everyone else).

Each Environmental Science student will complete the requirements for one of the following options.

Environmental Science Options:

Option 1. Environmental Science

Required Courses

  1. 01:160:307-308 Organic Chemistry (4,4) OR 01:375:209 Elements of Organic Chemistry (3) and 11:375:340 Environmental Applications of Organic Chemistry (3)
  2. NOTE that 307-308 is often required for admission to graduate programs.
  3. 01:640:1__ - 1__ CALC1 and CALC2 (4,4)

At least four of the following courses:

  1. 11:375:346 Introduction to Atmospheric Chemistry (3)
  2. 11:375:407 Environmental Toxicology (3)
  3. 11:375:411 Environmental Microbiology (3)
  4. 11:375:423 Environmental Fate and Transport (3)
  5. 11:375:444 Water Chemistry (3)
  6. 11:375:453 Soil Ecology (3)

At least 2 of the following technical elective courses:

  1. Additional courses from the six listed above, or:

  3. 01:160:323-324 Physical Chemistry (3,3) or 01:160:327-328 Physical Chemistry (4,4)
  4. 11:375:302 Elements of Water and Water Waste Treatment (3)
